The popularity of PVC, otherwise known as vinyl, stretches across a wide range of crucial manufacturing industries. While the material performs exceptionally well in these myriad applications, at Presco, we wondered if certain industries could benefit if we switched up the script a bit. By matching the specific needs of industries to PVC compounds and alloys, we have developed an extensive line of cost-effective and high quality options.
Perhaps one of the best examples of this is the blending of vinyl and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). While low amounts of the TPU polymer was used in previous compounds, Presco had never tried to develop a PVC alloy with a high TPU content. That is, until a project requested by a client required a higher loading of TPU into our standard PVC formulation. Our R&D Department took on this challenge and was able to create an alloy that fit the customers project needs, as well as their budget.
While this specific formulation was originally intended for singular use, we discovered that these high TPU content alloys could be employed in a variety of client applications. This is primarily due to the fact that the TPU to PVC ratio translates to an alloy with significantly enhanced strength without seeing a corresponding rise in price. This is especially true considering that the alloy can be extruded down to a thin 2.5mil, offering a cost-effective option to our customers that rivals the strength and density of expensive, full TPU films.
For those customers already using PVC formulations, switching to PVC/TPU alloys can prove to be beneficial in other ways as well. In colder climates, films can be protected from cracking by integrating the TPU polymer. Not only that, these alloys are also highly durable, with abrasion resistance and increased tear strength, adding to the film’s lifespan.
